CCD Tokyo Creative Center — Hirakawachō: a micro urban lounge

CCD / Cheng Chung Design opened its Tokyo Creative Center in Hirakawachō, Chiyoda, a few steps from the Imperial Palace. The 735 m² (7,911 sq ft) space is built on the idea of “Symbiosis Between Japan and the West” and borrows the scenography of CCD’s hotel work to make an office that is part café, part lounge and part showroom.

Concept

Japan and the West

The centre is conceived as a crafted work in itself, rooted in the philosophy of “Symbiosis Between Japan and the West”: a reinterpretation of Japanese architecture and culture in a contemporary language rather than a collage of styles.

At the entrance stands If I Were You, a horse sculpture by the Chinese artist Huang Cheng from founder Joe Cheng’s collection.

01 · Hospitality

A living laboratory

Drawing on CCD’s hotel design, the office becomes a “micro urban lounge” and “living laboratory”, where café, lounge and showroom run into each other.

02 · Materials

Calm tones and found objects

Natural, calm tones set the mood. Handcrafted artworks and objects, many sourced by the team in Japan and abroad, fill the rooms, while asymmetric circulation and flexible partitions replace a rigid office plan.
