What is activity based working (ABW) in Japan?

ABW means you choose the place by the task: a booth to focus, a café table to talk, a desk to settle in. It has become the most common brief for new head offices in Japan.

01 · The definition

Choose where to work from the task in front of you

Nikon built its new head office in Nishi-Oi on this rule. In the company’s words, people decide when and where to work from the task in front of them — and the building offers a dining area, lounges and an atrium to choose from.

02 · From the furniture makers

ITOKI and KOKUYO live it first

Japan’s office-furniture makers were among the first to adopt ABW in their own offices. ITOKI designed its Tokyo office around it when it opened in 2018; KOKUYO’s Shinagawa office runs on it too, starting with picking up the tools for the day.

03 · With an anchor

Mori Trust keeps a base for every department

ABW does not have to mean nobody belongs anywhere. Mori Trust’s version keeps one fixed idea: each department has a BASE, a place that belongs to it, and the rest of the building is chosen by task.

04 · Floor by floor

Murata zones each floor

Murata refitted its Tokyo branch in 2023 with each floor zoned for activity-based working, so a booth, a café table or a desk becomes a choice about the task rather than a fixed address.
