Do Japanese offices have nap rooms?

Rarely a room built for sleeping — but the rest space is now standard. Across the offices WALL has walked, the pattern is a quiet room with no stated purpose, one per floor in the best cases.

01 · The short answer

A room to do nothing, rather than a room to sleep

Japanese companies rarely build a room labelled “nap room”. What they build instead is a rest space: soft seating, lower light, no stated purpose. Cybozu, whose Tokyo floor is otherwise packed with cafes and meeting rooms, puts it plainly.

“A relax space rounds out the floor — because an office built for teamwork also needs a place to be quietly alone.”

02 · One per floor

KOEI TECMO gives every floor a different one

At the KOEI TECMO headquarters in Yokohama the rest space repeats on every floor, and each one is themed differently, so a break on the 2nd floor does not feel like a break on the 7th. It is the most systematic version we have seen.

03 · Rest as play

Hammocks, putter golf and two arcade cabinets

BANDAI NAMCO’s co-creation floor treats rest as something active. The free space is furnished like the outdoors — wooden chairs, camp chairs, hammocks — with putter golf and Pac-Man in the corner.

04 · The real nap

A tatami corner, in Ho Chi Minh City

The closest thing to an actual nap room in our archive is not in Japan. FOURDIGIT’s Vietnam studio built a tatami corner for the local after-lunch nap — a small reversal, in which an Asian office teaches a Japanese company how to rest.
