Shimadzu Diagnostics — Ueno: a small robot on the desk, twenty floors above the park

A ninety-year-old maker of culture media and diagnostic reagents moved in 2017 to a floor overlooking Ueno Park, and shows the whole of it — including the president’s room.

Concept

The tour that includes the president’s desk

Company office tours stop at the door of the executive floor. This one does not. Shimadzu Diagnostics lists, in order and with the same weight as everything else, the president’s room — “the office where the head of the company makes management decisions” — then the executive reception room, then the executive meeting room where, it says, the company’s direction is decided.

The rooms themselves are not showy: dark timber, a long table, a screen. What is unusual is the decision to put them in a recruiting page at all, and it sets the tone for the rest. The reception is deliberately quiet in colour and has a small AI robot on the counter; the working floor is described in terms of chairs and desk heights rather than atmosphere; and the archive, two rooms of paper, is shown because it is on the same floor as everyone else.

01 · The entrance

Quiet colours, and a robot

The entrance is held down in colour, and the company notes that an AI-capable Robohon greets visitors there. A discussion space sits directly behind it.

02 · The executive rooms

Shown, unusually

The president’s room, the executive reception room used for important outside visitors, and the executive meeting room where the company’s direction is settled.

03 · The lounge

Ueno, from the far end

The far end of the office floor is a lounge looking out over Ueno. The company describes it as somewhere to take a breath between jobs, or hold a short meeting.

04 · The working floor

Chairs, and heights

The main office floor is described in equipment rather than mood: chairs designed on ergonomic principles, and desks whose height can be changed.

05 · The archive, and the big room

Paper, on the same floor

Two archive rooms hold the company’s past records, and the company makes a point of noting that they are on the same floor as the office. A large meeting room takes briefings.
