QUESTIONS › WHAT IS A CHōREI, THE JAPANESE MORNING MEETING?

Question · Working in Japan

What is a chōrei, the Japanese morning meeting?

A short gathering at the start of the day or the week, standing more often than sitting. In the offices WALL has walked it has shaped real rooms — a hall for thousands, a stage for five hundred, a stretch of whiteboard wall.

01 · The short answer

Rakuten has held one every week since 1997

The most famous version in Japan belongs to Rakuten, which calls it Asakai.

“The symbol of internal communication is Asakai, the company-wide morning meeting held weekly since the company was founded in 1997 and now linking more than fifty offices in Japan and abroad by video.” The headquarters has a hall for it.

02 · Standing at the whiteboard

SQUARE ENIX holds it where the team already is

Most chōrei need no room at all. SQUARE ENIX’s development floors have no partitions between productions, and the white wall at the end of the floor is a whiteboard — the company says many projects hold their morning meeting standing in front of one.

Indeed Japan gives Tuesday mornings a venue

At Indeed Japan a barrier-free stage and floor under the mission mural hold about 500 people: lunch every day, a sales-wide morning meeting on Tuesdays, onboarding events on Fridays — and a gong struck, with a theme song, whenever a target is hit.

GungHo and adastria size the room for the whole company

GungHo’s large meeting rooms hold more than 30 people each and can be joined together for all-hands mornings and briefings. adastria runs its monthly all-hands in A CAFE, the café floor that also serves as canteen, venue and, with a runway down the middle, a place to hold a fashion show.
