spicebox — Tokyo: seven boxes that flip open

spicebox is a digital agency in the Hakuhodo group, working across strategy, interactive promotion and creative digital marketing. Its name suggests surprises tumbling out of a box, so nendo placed seven box-shaped meeting rooms around the 923 m² (9,935 sq ft) office, each entered through a wall that has “flipped open”.

Boxes

The seven boxes differ in size and finish, and each opens in a slightly different way.

The openings link inside and outside and shape sightlines, so each box reveals itself as you walk around.

Copiers behind the boxes

Things that need not be seen — the photocopier, bins, the fridge — hide behind the boxes, so the whole floor becomes active office space.
