Shueisha TOON FACTORY — 20 km of aluminium tape like manga speed lines

Shueisha TOON FACTORY is a creative company focused on manga and webtoons. Its new 135 m² floor had windows on one side only and a ceiling just 2.2 m high. GAMMA Architects kept the existing ceiling and covered it with about 20 km of heat-resistant aluminium tape, hand-applied piece by piece, whose lines recall the speed lines of manga.

Concept

Tape on the ceiling

Heat-resistant aluminium tape is an industrial material not meant as a finish, but its reflections add depth and a flicker of light.

The tape runs the length of the floor in a regular yet random rhythm. Brushing makes it reflect softly, mirroring the buildings and street trees outside and bringing the view in.

01 · Background

A backdrop never seen before

The overlapping lines make a background no one has seen before, like the background of a manga panel.

02 · Waiting

LC2 in weekly magazines

In the waiting area, a sofa modelled on the classic LC2 is upholstered with weekly magazines that were no longer needed. Craftsmen rolled magazine covers by hand into the piping. The hope is that each person here works as the hero of their own manga panel.
