HATTA DESIGN — PERKSHOP: a design office behind a coffee stand and plant shop

HATTA DESIGN moved its office into a former car body and paint shop in a residential area of Sumida, next to a waterside park. To make architecture part of daily life, the 90 m² ground floor combines a coffee stand, a plant shop and the design office.

Concept

A shop on the street

Yuki Hatta reasons that people near a flower shop put more flowers in their rooms; in the same way, a place that makes people aware of architecture nearby could improve their homes.

Design offices can feel hard to enter, so a coffee stand and plant shop were added to blend into the street.

01 · Depth

Seamless to the park

The long, deep space joins coffee stand, plant shop and office without breaks. Repeated shelving and carefully set heights of counters, tables and door frames let you see right through to the park at the back.

02 · Materials

Joined but separate

Finishes vary by zone, so the parts connect while staying loosely distinct. The upper floor, now storage, is planned to become a gallery and event space.
