Greenberg Traurig — Tokyo: raked sand, kimono patterns and the purple of the Imperial Palace

For the Japan office of the law firm Greenberg Traurig, Gensler worked to a theme of modern Japanese-ness. Reception pairs timber walls with a green wall patterned like the raked sand of a garden; the work café has kimono-pattern wallpaper and lights that recall folding fans; and the accents are royal purple and pink, inspired by the Imperial Palace and cherry blossom.

Concept

Modern Japanese-ness

Gensler designed a workplace fit for a professional services firm, under the theme of a modern Japanese sensibility.

Reception brings in timber-finished walls and a green wall whose pattern is taken from samon, the ripples raked into the sand of a Japanese garden — a room with the feel of Japanese architecture and gardens.

01 · The green wall

Ripples of a garden

The green wall is the piece visitors remember: planting arranged in curves, like sand raked around stones.

02 · The work café

Kimono wallpaper and fan-shaped lights

The work café expresses local culture with wallpaper in kimono patterns and lighting that suggests folding fans. The accent colours throughout — royal purple and pink — are inspired by the Imperial Palace and cherry blossom.

03 · The seminar room

One room, or two

The seminar room next to the café has a movable partition, so for events the two can open into one large space.
