Aizawa Concrete — Namie: a church-like hall of precast concrete

Aizawa Concrete, based in Hokkaido, built its Fukushima RDM Center in Namie, a town badly hit by the 2011 earthquake. The 2,098 m² building combines research, development, manufacturing and marketing. Its 318 precast, prestressed parts make a column-free hall 15 m wide and 10 m high, with a dignity the designers compare to a church.

Concept

A hall facing the sea

Churches are built facing east. The building stretches from a large opening on the west side of the test hall towards the sea in the east, in the hope that technology born here will help the recovery.

The prestressed precast method makes the building strong against shaking and also flexible like rubber.

01 · Making

All on site

All 318 precast pieces were made and assembled on site, and the design, production and construction were all handled by ADAAC. Places with different ceiling heights cross each other like a converted building.

02 · 3D printing

A curtain blown by the wind

A concrete 3D printer is part of the design. Wind blowing across the site was simulated in Houdini, and the result was printed as a curtain wall that looks like a curtain moving in the breeze. Printed parts were also prestressed into structural walls.
