Remedy and Company — Tokiwabashi: the twenty-third floor, and a gate made of projection

Concept

A gate, rebuilt as a projection

Tokiwabashi was one of the gates into Edo Castle — the point at which the city outside became the city inside. The tower now standing on that ground is part of the largest redevelopment in central Tokyo, and the company on its twenty-third floor has taken the history literally.

The concept is called Innovation Gateway, and it is doing two jobs at once: marking the company’s own renewal after changing its name in 2022, and acknowledging what the site used to be. The entrance is a wall of projection mapping, running seasonal and regional imagery — cherry, autumn colour, snow — so that the gate is made of light rather than timber. Past it the floor is bright and plainly furnished, with the city on two sides, and the one piece of theatre left is the meeting room called DA VINCI, whose glass walls tint when the room is in use.

A wall that changes with the season

The entrance wall is projection-mapped, running imagery that changes with the season and the region.

Free address, twenty-three storeys up

The working floor is free address, planted, and lit from two sides by the height of the building.

03 · The booths

Concentration, with a view

The concentration booths are set against the glass, so that the reward for shutting yourself away is the city.

04 · The phone booths

One person, standing up

A run of single phone booths handles video calls, set into the floor rather than along a corridor.

Glass that tints

The main meeting room is glazed on all sides, with smart glass that darkens when the room is in use.
