DENSO TEN — 4,000 m² floors turned into an ABW office

DENSO TEN makes car electronics. Its office floors are about 4,000 m² each and 120 m long, once packed with more than 1,000 desks in islands. With UCHIDA YOKO, the company rebuilt three floors as a free-address, activity-based office where staff choose where to work, in a project covering about 12,000 m² and 3,500 people.

Fixed desks for everyone made the floors cramped, and there was nowhere to talk without booking a meeting room. Online meetings also brought noise problems.

Managers keep fixed seats at key points, surrounded by group-address table desks, with one or two collaboration areas per floor.

Communication by the glass

Window seats had been hot in summer, cold in winter and glaring in the afternoon. Now they hold bright, casual communication areas with views.

Booths for sound

Behind them are booths for online meetings and focused work, away from noise. Staff report better chairs, more face-to-face talk and a welcome change of mood when they move.
